Anime
Well, I haven't seen many movies recently, but I have been reading manga left, right and center. So, here are the series I have read or am reading. Pretear, Chobits, Amazing Agent Luna, Dazzle, Dramacon, Immortal Rain, xxxHolic, RG Veda and Gunslinger Girl. I have seen the anime of Gunslinger Girl and Pretear. Gunslinger Girl hits all the philosophical and ethical considerations to modifying humans and using brainwashed people as soldiers.
I'd say Dazzle is the hardest to follow. Pretear is definitely one of the most lighthearted, and is a modern-day Japanese version of Snow White. If you see the anime, definitely read the manga afterwards.. the manga is fleshes out the anime quite well (and has a better ending, imo). Amazing Agent Luna is laugh-out-loud funny at times. That's just what happens when you get a top secret agent and her boss and her psychiatrist pretending to be a family as she enters high school to snoop out one of the big baddies. Dramacon is about the experiences of a girl who is the author of her own manga. It's about her couple of days at a 'con' where people who write/draw mangas gather together and hang out. It doesn't have a typical manga feel, in my opinion, but it is an enjoyable story so far. Chobits is a eight-volume discussion about how robots and humans should? interact. It is based on the story of a boy who finds a discarded robot and his trying to teach her and figure out who she is and where she came from. xxxHolic is fine.. I have three more volumes to read of it, and it's been a while since I've read it, so I'll review it separately.
My two favourites are RG Veda and Immortal Rain. Immortal Rain I consider 'mine' as it wasn't recommended to me by anyone - I found it all by myself! The Grim Reaper's granddaughter who promised her grandfather she'd pursue and kill the one man he couldn't - Rain Jewlitt, the Immortal. They pair up as he waits for the man who made him immortal to return and she waits for a way to make him mortal again (so she can kill him, of course). Naturally, they fall in love. It's done very well, and I thoroughly enjoy reading it. RG Veda is approaching its final volume (10), and is basically about warriors fulfilling a prophecy and their journeys. I quite like it, but I imagine it's not for everyone. My husband also enjoys RG Veda. There's a little romance, but mostly it's about a man protecting a child who will ultimately be his death.. and he knows it. I can't quite put my finger on why it's such a great series, but it's well worth reading.
